Sensors Could Do More

Development boards with I2C sensors

A key component of many wearable gadgets, like pedometers, smart watches and fitness bracelets are tiny integral sensors. Look at the photo, those black ICs in the middle of each printed circuit board are smart sensors, that not only measure acceleration in various ranges, but also know how to react on different events, that might include a step, free fall, rolling over and other things that could happen to someone who wears a gadget. Some even include 3D-magnetometers, and all have I2C/SPI digital interfaces.

But most of consumers do not require anything more than just counting steps daily, so this is most popular usage for these ICs.

What is my opinion on all that? I am sure that we can and should use them for something better than just a step counter.

How exactly?
